The currency exchange rate is fixed at US $1.00 = BZ $2.00, but because the US Dollar is accepted virtually everywhere in Belize, there is little need to exchange currencies. Similar to buying real estate in the U.S., the buying cycle can take a few months to complete. It depends on what you plan to do with your Belize property. Those investing in Belize real estate will have a shorter buying cycle than those wishing to move to Belize. Typically this process takes 30 to 90 days.


  1. Are there any programs for retirees?

Yes; anyone over 45 years or older can become a Qualified Retired Person. If you qualify, your personal effects can be imported free of duties and taxes. Additionally, you will be exempt from paying taxes/duties on all income/receipts from sources outside of Belize including income from work performed or investments. The temperatures in Belize range from 60°F and 90°F throughout the year with a dry season and a rainy season (June to November). Belize’s annual rainfall averages from 60 inches in northern regions to 160 inches in southern areas. This is a very large increase compared to a 30 inch average yearly rainfall for the United States.
